Almost like humans: robots Ameca and Mesmer show convincing emotions [видео]

Engineered Arts Company, British developer and manufacturer humanoid robots, recently showcased one of her most lifelike creations in a video posted to YouTube. The robot named Ameca exhibits a series of incredibly human-like facial expressions.

At the start of the video, Ameca appears to “wake up” as his face conveys a mixture of confusion and frustration when he opens his eyes. But when Ameca starts looking at his hands and arms, the robot opens its mouth and raises its eyebrows in amazement. At the end of the video, Ameka smiles and holds out her hand in greeting to the audience.

Unfortunately, the Ameca doesn’t walk, flip or parkour like the Boston Dynamics robots. Engineered Arts says they want to instill this ability in him someday. As for whether Ameca uses artificial intelligence, Engineered Arts explains that it leaves the possibilities of artificial intelligence to the discretion of the developers, and itself only deals with the creation of ultra-realistic bodies.

If that’s not enough for you, Engineered Arts has also developed another realistic bot called Mesmer. The company claims to have used 3D scans of real people to give the bot precise bone structure, skin texture and realistic facial expressions. In the video, posted just days after the Ameca demo, Mesmer displays a number of even more convincing expressions given that this bot has more realistic skin and facial features than Ameca does at the moment.

If you would like to see Ameca live, Engineered Arts says it will be on display CES 2022 in January. And we just have to wait for the moment when Engineered Arts joins forces with Boston Dynamics to bring something like a game out Detroit: Become Human in the real life.
