Anonymous Sudan raises SAS buyout to $3 million

Hackers increase the amount of the ransom for the second time, as the airline does not contact them.

hacker group “Anonymous Sudan” increased up to $3 million in ransom demand for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) to stop DDoS attacks on the airline’s websites that have been going on since February.

Despite initially presenting themselves as politically motivated hacktivists, the group appears to be resorting to extortion tactics for financial gain.

On May 29, Anonymous Sudan hackers posted a ransom note on their Telegram channel claiming that SAS and its services had been paralyzed for more than 5 days. Cybercriminals have warned that if the company does not take action, DDoS attacks will continue. At the time of publication, the company’s website is up and running.

“We will continue to punish you and your company non-stop, as we have done for the last 120 hours.”— hackers wrote in Telegram.

S.A.S. reacted to user complaints, acknowledging the issue with the website and reassuring customers that SAS is “working on a quick fix.”

May 24 intruders disabled the SAS website and app , depriving the company’s customers of the opportunity to purchase airline tickets and print boarding passes. On May 25, Anonymous Sudan decided to increase the ransom 50 times from the original $3,500 to $175,000. The hackers said they would continue the attack for as long as it took until the main airline in Sweden, Denmark and Norway paid.

Anonymous Sudan for the first time started attacking the SAS in February by disabling the company’s website and exposing some user data. Some customers who tried to sign in to the SAS mobile app were redirected to other accounts and accessed their contact information and directions. The motivation for the attacks, according to the hackers, was the burning of the Koran during the January protests in Stockholm.
