China is the world’s largest technology market and has long been dominated by Applebut this is not the case in all segments, since there is one in which the Cupertino-based firm continues to be surpassed by the Chinese firm Huawei: the one of the Smart Watches.

A recent report published by Counterpoint reveals that in the Asian country they follow selling more Huawei Watch than Apple Watchas confirmed by the sales figures for the first quarter of 2023.

Huawei dominates the Chinese smartphone market

According to the Counterpoint study, huawei is the manufacturer that sold the most smart watches in China in the first quarter of the year with a market share of 37%. The Chinese firm ranked first in all price ranges, from 100 to 400 dollars, being the Huawei Watch GT 3 the second best-selling smartwatch in the first quarter of the year.

The best-selling smartwatch in China in this period was the Apple Watch Series 8something that was not enough to prevent Apple from being relegated to the second drawer of the ranking with a market share of 35%.

Third and fourth place in this classification are occupied by OPPO and xiaomi with a participation of 8% in both cases and this quintet is closed by Amazfit, a sub-brand of Xiaomi, with a market share of 7%. In this sense, it should be noted that OPPO increased its market share by 4% compared to the same period of the previous year and that it was the only brand that increased its sales both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter and that Xiaomi dominated the sub-$50 price segment and suffered a 42% year-on-year drop and a 31% quarter-over-quarter increase in the first quarter of the year.

Looking at the figures globally, this report confirms that smartwatch shipments in China decreased 28% yoy and 16% qoq in the first quarter of 2023, thus reaching its lowest level in the last twelve months.
