Apple reports biggest revenue drop since 2016

Apple has announced the results of the holiday quarter, which ended on December 31, 2022. And she has good and bad news.

What is known

The bad news (for Apple itself) is the drop in revenue. According to the results of the quarter, the company received $117.2 billion, which is 5% less than in the same period last year. As a result, this is Apple’s first annualized quarterly revenue drop since 2019 and the biggest drop since 2016.

Sales fell in all key markets, especially in China and Europe. The company says three factors contributed to this: a stronger dollar, manufacturing issues in China that delayed shipments of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the overall macroeconomic environment.

Almost all products also showed a decline: smartphones – a drop of 8.17%, Mac computers – by 28.66%, accessories and devices for the home – by 8.3%. Growth was only in the category of tablets (+29.6%) and services (+6.4%).

The good news is that Apple has crossed a new psychological milestone in terms of the number of active devices. Now there are already 2 billion iPhones, iPads, Macs and other devices in active use around the world. In 2012 there were only 500 million, in 2016 – 1 billion, and in 2020 – 1.5 billion.
