And it provoked a strong reaction from human rights activists.

In June 2022, 9 members of the ethics board of armed drone maker Axon Enterprise stepped down after the company decided to go ahead with a taser-equipped drone project they voted against.

This week, the company faced fresh criticism from former advisers after its speech at the conference TASERCON . The event is positioned as an opportunity to familiarize law enforcement and public security agencies with new technologies that can help them in their work. Axon introduced taser drones for use by police and schools to prevent mass shootings.

AT report former employees say that the misuse of drones equipped with stun guns can violate the civil rights of people and communities under excessive police control.

AT report Axon detailed plans to combat mass shootings (massshooting) using drones using “non-lethal energy weapons”. Report co-authors include:

  • Barry Friedman, co-founder of the Policing Project;
  • Miles Brundage, Head of Policy Research at OpenAI;
  • Jennifer Lynch, director of litigation at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

They listed some of the potential outcomes of police use of Axon Taser drones, including:

  • increased use of force;
  • dehumanization of certain personalities;
  • reducing the “personal moral guilt” of drone operators.

In 2018, Axon created an independent AI ethics board to provide expert advice on the impact of its technology on the community. In recent years, tech giants such as Meta* and Google have set up their own AI ethics committees, which has wondered if these companies are engaging in ethics washing to avoid wider scrutiny.

* The Meta company and the company’s products (Instagram and Facebook) are recognized as extremist organizations; their activities are prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.
