ChatGPT successfully passed the medical school exam

Artificial intelligence again gave odds to the human mind.

We previously wrote that ChatGPT successfully passed the exam in the MBA “Operations Management” course, which is usually taken by students of business colleges. This time around, a group of researchers made a popular chatbot pass the same medical exams as aspiring doctors in US medical schools. According to them, the bot did a very good job.

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot by Open AI, performed “surprisingly and impressively” in all three tests that are part of the US medical license exam. “ChatGPT passed all three exams at the pass level without any special training,” according to a research article published on the website. medRxiv.

The first part of the Medical Licensing Examination is taken after two years of medical school and students must devote about 400 hours of study to pass it. Fourth-year medical students take the second part of the exam, and doctors with postgraduate medical education up to one year take the third part. It is clear that a neural network took part in the experiment, but the result is still impressive.

The bot demonstrated “moderate accuracy” and “high internal consistency,” the researchers said. They also noted that AI performance is likely to improve as language models continue to evolve.

The chatbot showed low accuracy only in the first part of the exam, which real medical students find the most difficult. “This result reveals a key vulnerability in pre-trained large language models: AI capabilities become coupled to human ones,” the paper says.

Given the susceptibility of AI to misinformation, we can say that it is still far from a full-fledged doctor. But it can be applied as a tool for risk assessment, data analysis, or training, among other potential uses. “ChatGPT has the partial ability to teach medicine by revealing new and non-obvious concepts that may not be available to students,” the study says.
