Chinese researchers reported the successful destruction of the fifth-generation American fighter F-35 Lightning II. But in virtual combat, which was first simulated using artificial intelligence.
What is known
In a computer simulation, two planes collided: an American and a Chinese one. The former has a top speed of Mach 1.3 (1,600 km/h), while the latter has a top speed of Mach 11 (13,580 km/h).
The Chinese fighter was controlled by artificial intelligence. The neural network directed the aircraft away from the enemy aircraft. After he moved away from the target, the AI fired an over-the-shoulder missile in the opposite direction.
The missile flew 30 km and hit the F-35 virtual fighter. According to Chinese scientists, the air battle ended in less than 8 seconds. Liu Yanbin, associate professor at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, stressed that the tactics chosen by artificial intelligence were illogical, but minimized the risk to the pilot as much as possible.
The researchers believe that in future conflicts using hypersonic aircraft, pilots will not be able to accurately aim due to extremely high speeds. And they can come to the aid of artificial intelligence, which will take on this task.
