Chinese scientists have created a machine that turns thoughts into speech

But there is one caveat – the mind-reading machine only understands Mandarin Chinese.

By messages Chinese media, Chinese researchers created a mind-reading machine which can convert thoughts into spoken Mandarin (the official language of China and Taiwan).

The team used electrocorticography (ECoG), a type of electrophysiological monitoring that records brain signals directly from the surface of the brain.

The researchers implanted electrodes in the brains of 5 patients who had undergone brain tumor surgery and asked them to say 1 of 8 syllables with different tones during a medical operation. Electrode implants recorded the activity, and the model then deciphered it thanks to its ability to simultaneously select both the main syllable and the tone of brain signals.

The researchers say their study could help Chinese-speaking patients with communication disorders. It can also be used to improve the effectiveness of brain-computer interface technology, which allows people to control computers with their brains.

Earlier research has reached the level of generating speech from brain signals (speech synthesis) for non-tonal languages such as English and Japanese, but tonal languages such as Mandarin pose unique challenges for experimentation. Two billion people speak tonal languages, representing over 60% of the languages spoken worldwide.

Mandarin, like other tonal languages, uses the pitch change of syllables to convey different meanings. For example, 1 Mandarin syllable can mean 4 different words, all depending on the tone used.
