Learning in Chaos: A Cyber Attack Brings Educational Institutions to Collapse in Louisiana!

Louisiana Universities are transitioning to remote learning and turning off the Internet for students.

Several colleges and universities in Louisiana are rebuilding their networks following a cyberattack that forced schools to cut off internet access for thousands of students and faculty.

The cyberattacks affected the University of New Orleans, the LSU Agricultural Center, Nunez Community College, and Southern University at Shreveport.

Lieutenant Melissa Mathey of the Louisiana State Police said the recovery efforts include removing the capabilities of potential threat actors and putting in place state-of-the-art security tools, including hardware and software. The Louisiana State Police Cybercrime Investigation Unit is continuing its forensics and investigation.

University of New Orleanswhich serves about 7,000 students, along with other institutions, March 26 discovered indicator of compromise and disabled their campuses’ internet systems to enable security features.

According to the University, the following network systems on the UNO campus were affected: campus internet, Wi-Fi, UNO email, Moodle virtual learning environment, Workday human capital management system, and PeopleSoft management platform. Systems will be back to normal soon.

It is worth noting that the student information systems are hosted off the main network, so they were not affected by the incident. At the moment, all systems have been restored and the University is operating as usual.

Nunez Community College informed that he “will be working and conducting classes remotely on Monday, March 27,” pending a return to normal work on Tuesday.

Agricultural Center LSU did not release any statement on the matter and did not respond to requests for comment.

Southern University at Shreveport declared that guest Wi-Fi and other apps are still not working due to the incident. All classes at the school will be held virtually until further notice.

None of the educational institutions commented on whether this was a ransomware attack.
