General Atomics is developing LongShot drones with missiles to be launched from large aircraft

The American company General Atomics, the developer of the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper drones, is working on a new generation of drones. The project is called LongShot and is already close to the third phase.

What is known

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the United States Department of Defense (DARPA) has already received developments from General Atomics to create a new generation of unmanned aerial vehicles. But the details of the project have not yet been disclosed.

Together with General Atomics, Northrop Grumman, the developer of the RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-4C Triton drones, participates in the LongShot program. In the near future, DARPA should study the proposals of each manufacturer and complete the second phase of the project.

For the third phase, DARPA will select only one company, which will create a working prototype of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The construction of the drone will begin before the end of this year, and the first flight tests will take place in fiscal year 2024.

DARPA has several key UAV requirements. First, the drone must independently carry air-to-air missiles. Secondly, the drone must be adapted to be launched from military aircraft so that they do not engage in combat with the enemy.
