Google has lost the case against Sonos and will have to pay $2.3 for each of the 14 million devices that infringed Sonos’s patent.

The good relationship between Google and Sonos was cut short in 2020, when the company specializing in the creation of speakers and other audio devices sued the search engine company for, supposedly, having infringed a patent from Sonos related to audio retransmission technology in different rooms. The Sonos lawsuit led to the disappearance of functions of the Android operating systemand led Google to counterattack through another lawsuit.

Now, everything seems to indicate that the case comes to an end. And this time, Google will not get away with it: the San Francisco court has sentenced Google to pay Sonos $32.5 million for infringing one of the company’s patents.

Google infringed one of Sonos’s patents

For this reason, the company must pay Sonos $2.30 for each of the more than 14 million of devices sold. Or what is the same, 32.5 million of US dollars.

Although from Sonos they claim to be “deeply grateful” for “the time and diligence of the jury” when it comes to defending the validity of their patents, the company claims to believe that Google infringes over 200 different Sonos patents, and accuse the search engine company of being “a serial infringer” of its patent portfolio. Therefore, they indicate that their objective is still to make Google end up paying a fair fee for Sonos inventions that the company would have appropriated.

For its part, Google explains that it is “a very limited dispute” about some “very specific” functions and “that are not commonly used.” Also, remember that only one of six patents that Sonos claimed has been deemed infringed. The rest were dismissed.
