Experts Warn: Attackers Can Steal Your Data Through Free Wi-Fi Networks

Fake Wi-Fi hotspots give hackers access to your credentials and browsing history.

9to5Mac Experts warn that attackers can use public WiFinetworks to steal data from smartphone users.

Candide West, vice president of Acronis, said that attackers organize free Wi-Fi networks in crowded places, offer users to connect to the network, and then steal their personal data.

West noted that fake WiFi is quite popular, which can reveal credentials for unencrypted services or sites, such as those from the POP3 mail protocol. Despite the fact that most applications are encrypted using the TLS protocol, data leakage still occurs.

Also, malicious Wi-Fi networks allow a cybercriminal to view the user’s traffic and track his activity on the Internet. In addition, when using public Wi-Fi, there is a risk that a hacker can compromise a device with outdated firmware.

Candide West urged gadget owners to use a personal cellular network and, if possible, not connect to unknown free Wi-Fi networks in public places. According to West, the transfer of unencrypted data can be prevented, but for this the user must understand how information encryption works on a smartphone or computer.

Formerly FBI warned users so that they do not use free charging stations at airports, hotels, and shopping malls, as attackers use these stations to install malware and spyware on connected computers and phones.
