Illinois bans drones from using weapons or facial recognition

Illinois law enforcement has been allowed to use drones at some public events. However, drones are prohibited from carrying weapons or using facial recognition, with a few exceptions.

What is known

State Gov. JB Pritzker signed the legislation into law. The new rules lift the ban on law enforcement from using drones to “gathering information”operating for the last seven years.

The law is meant to prevent crimes like the July 4, 2022 parade shooting in Highland Park. State Senator Julie Morrison argues that the tragedy could have been avoided if not for the current ban on drones.

However, the document limits the armament of drones and face recognition due to “concerns about surveillance and privacy”said the legislator

The new rules also allow law enforcement to inspect infrastructure and help emergency services operate drones.

Police officers are still required to destroy information gathered from the last 30 days unless it is relevant to an investigation. In addition, they were forbidden to sell the data recorded by drones.
