Blizzard has confirmed that it has reached an impressive, but actually slightly embarrassing, milestone in the fight for fair play, with over 100,000 accounts suspended since Overwatch 2 launched in October 2022.

What is known

Even at the release of Overwatch 2, there was a certain amount of criticism that it was more like Overwatch 1.5 and it became even more when it became known that the game would be free and hundreds of scammers poured into the game. Blizzard immediately promised to actively fight against cheaters, but 100,000 blocked accounts in just six months is a crazy number! As Blizzard herself says:

“Our first guiding principle, ‘Honest is fun,’ stems from our belief that cheating is never acceptable in Overwatch 2. Playing with cheaters is frustrating, depriving everyone of a fun and fair match. Our team never stops working to identify cheaters and protection from them, and we would like to share how you can help!”.

All in all, it seems like Blizzard is willing to spend a huge amount of time and energy improving their platform in terms of combating cheating, disruptive and toxic player behavior, and avoiding cheating. Now the Defense Matrix initiative has appeared, which will be responsible for these processes in the future, so it will be interesting to see what else the company can offer.
