Innovative Security Copilot Assistant Helps Fight Cyber Threats

The product will facilitate the work of cybersecurity experts thanks to artificial intelligence.

Microsoft unveils Security Copilot, a new AI cybersecurity assistant based on GPT-4 by Open AI. The corporation is constantly creating AI assistants for various areas, and this time the attention is paid to security specialists. Previously, the company has already presented Copilot AI assistant for Microsoft 365 enterprise applications.

Security Copilot is designed for security professionals and helps to recognize violations and analyze the huge amount of information that comes in every day. The AI assistant looks like a normal dialog box, but uses the 65 trillion signals collected daily by Microsoft and specialized cybersecurity skills to detect threats. Security Copilot is designed to support analysts, not replace them, and enables collaboration and knowledge sharing among colleagues.

Security Copilot, by processing natural language, allows experts to request vulnerability reviews, examine files, URLs or code, and receive information about incidents and alerts from other information security tools. All requests and responses are recorded, providing a complete audit trail for investigators.

Analysis results can be consolidated and summarized in a common workspace for collaborating on threat investigations. As Chan Kawaguchi, AI security architect at Microsoft, points out, it’s like “separate workspaces for researchers and a shared notebook to share work.” Thus, Microsoft Security Copilot facilitates the work of cybersecurity professionals, speeds up incident investigation, and simplifies reporting.

One of the unique features of Security Copilot is scripting, which is a set of actions or automations combined into a single button or prompt. This allows security professionals to quickly reverse-engineer scripts without waiting for the help of colleagues. Security Copilot is even capable of creating PowerPoint slides describing incidents and attack vectors.

In its work, Microsoft, like Bing, clearly identifies data sources when requesting information about the latest vulnerabilities, using data from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology Vulnerability Database, and Microsoft’s own database.

However, Security Copilot can sometimes make mistakes. Microsoft has provided feedback to improve the quality of responses. Feedback from users will help to better understand and correct possible distortions.

Security Copilot is a dedicated assistant limited to security queries. This is a new step in Microsoft’s development of AI technologies, and the company plans to integrate such assistants into its software products and services.

Security Copilot is in pre-test and available to several Microsoft enterprise customers.
