IT-specialists offered to search among gamers

In connection with the shortage of IT-specialists in Russia, it was proposed to look for new employees in this area among gamers.

On January 26, at a round table in the Federation Council (SF), the problem of a shortage of personnel in the IT industry in Russia was discussed. As Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev stated at the end of 2022 at the government hour in the State Duma, about 100,000 IT specialists left Russia in a year. Despite the fact that 80% of those who left continue to work for Russian companies, this does not solve the shortage of personnel.

According to the publication ” Vedomosti ”, Alexander Kondakov, General Director of Mobile Electronic Education (MEO), during the discussion, proposed to solve the problem by searching for specialists among gamers. In particular, he proposed to develop domestic e-sports in order to identify promising personnel among the participants in the competition. “If the question is raised about the development of e-sports in Russia, then this can be a system of competitions that leads to the identification, support and maintenance of teams, which, in the future, will also be serious specialists in the field of development,” said the CEO of the IEO. In his opinion, “it is necessary to support in every possible way the development of domestic scientific schools in the field of video games, the corresponding engines and the development of video sports as a mass system for identifying and supporting personnel.”

However, some experts criticize this approach, believing that it is necessary to have a special education and work experience in the IT field in order to become a qualified specialist.

So, the founder of the Vengeance Games studio, Konstantin Sakhnov, told the publication that there is no successful practice of using cybersportsmen as developers. According to him, it is far from always possible for a cybersportsman to become a successful IT specialist, since this requires a long and high-quality education, as well as knowledge of programming languages and software packages. At the same time, he noted that games involve more cognitive abilities and soft skills such as teamwork, negotiation and analytical thinking.

According to Sakhnov, esportsmen “practically never have the skills of developers”: “These areas of activity do not intersect. There are people who make esports games, and these are also IT specialists and developers.” To increase the number of IT specialists in the market, he proposes to subsidize specialized universities and create an attractive climate and infrastructure.

MIPT Rector Dmitry Livanov proposed to focus on the field of secondary vocational education in the preparation of IT personnel. He also proposed to introduce modern programs in SPO, which have shown their effectiveness. Other experts also believe that it is necessary to redistribute the training of specialists between levels of education.
