Norwegian company Kongsberg will supply Japan with Joint Strike Missile (JSM) missiles for fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters. The contracts were signed in 2019 and 2020.
What is known
In November 2019, Kongsberg signed a $42 million contract with Japan. In December 2020, a contract worth almost $75 million was announced. A spokesman for the Japan Self-Defense Forces on March 16 at DSEI Japan 2023 said that the first JSM missiles would arrive “very soon.”
JSMs are designed primarily for the fifth generation F-35 Lightning II fighter. At the same time, the Self-Defense Forces are considering the possibility of integrating missiles into older F-15J aircraft, which are currently undergoing modernization.

The JSM is the aviation version of the Naval Strike Missile anti-ship missile. This variant was developed jointly with Lockheed Martin. The maximum launch range is 280 km. The missile is placed on an internal or external sling. It is used to destroy ground targets and ships.
