LockBit’s new attack on ION Group significantly affected trade transactions

A gang of extortionists plans to release the leaked data to the public.

Gang of extortionists lockbit claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on the ION Group, a British software company. ION Group products are used by financial institutions, banks, corporations for trading, investment management and market analysis.

On January 31, 2023, the company disclosed the incident in short statement stating that the attack affected ION Cleared Derivatives, a division of ION Markets.

“ION Cleared Derivatives, a division of ION Markets, experienced a cyber security event starting January 31, 2023 that impacted some of its services; all affected servers are now down, services are being restored,” the company said in a statement.

However, the attack had a deeper effect than the ION Group reported. Large clients using ION Group services in the United States and Europe have been forced to manually process transactions, resulting in significant delays.

FIA Global Trade Organization issued a statement Notice of Issues, which states that she is working with affected ION Group customers to assess the situation. The FIA is coordinating communication and information sharing, looking for ways to mitigate the impact of disruptions and seeking clarity on the regulatory obligations and reporting involved.

Today, LockBit ransomware added the ION Group to its list of victims on its data breach site. The hackers claim to have stolen data during the intrusion and are threatening to release the files as early as February 4th.

LockBit announces attack on ION Group

If ransomware actually possesses any of ION Group’s data, a public leak of that data could result in the disclosure of sensitive information, which would cause significant harm to both ION Group and their customers.
