Microsoft is developing a new operating system with modularity and optimization for different devices

Artificial intelligence will be one of the main features of the new Windows

For years, Microsoft has been trying to modernize its Windows operating system. The latest attempt to really push this forward was with Windows Core OS, a modular operating system that only runs UWP apps. Such a decision would deprive the platform of obsolete features, improve application stability, increase security, and greatly simplify the release and installation of system updates. Unfortunately, Windows Core OS did not go into circulation.

Then there was Windows 10X, tailored to work on foldable devices, taking full advantage of the split screen. But this project was also canceled in May 2021 after several years of development and internal testing.

According to insiders familiar with Microsoft’s plans, the company is once again hard at work on a new project designed to modernize the Windows platform. The project includes many ideas and developments from previously canceled Microsoft products.

The development, codenamed “Windows CorePC”, puts modularity at the forefront of the system without depriving it of support for legacy Win32 applications. The system will be flexibly optimized for various physical form factors of devices, as well as adjust the set of applications and other functions based on the needs of a particular product.

A major difference between CorePC and current versions of Windows is that the new system will be installed on several physical disk partitions at once, each of which will contain specific system data. Some sections will be read-only to all users, including administrators, so that absolutely no one can make unauthorized changes to critical system components. Partitioning the system will also provide faster updates, which will require you to restart your computer much less often to make changes.

In the image below you can clearly see how it will look like in reality. It may seem that such a number of system partitions will interfere with the comfort of working with files, but most likely, most local drives, especially read-only ones, will simply be hidden from the user’s eyes, so there will not be a big difference.



One system uses multiple partitions for optimal performance

Basically, Microsoft just changed the concept of Windows Core OS a bit. If before that the company tried to “rebuild” Windows from scratch as a modern OS without obsolete features, now the company has taken into account its past mistakes. The system will become modular, new functions and features will be added, but not at the expense of convenience and compatibility. The modular approach will allow Microsoft to release, for example, ultra-light editions of Windows for use on cheap ARM tablets or netbooks for study, effectively competing with Google’s Chromebook.

Another major insider is the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into Windows. This has been talked about for quite some time, and there is every reason to believe that this is true. Some AI features under development include Windows’ ability to analyze displayed content and provide contextual hints to quickly launch applications based on the information being viewed.

Also, Windows will be able to identify objects and text in images and allow the user to easily cut and paste these elements elsewhere without the use of graphical editors. Some AI features will require special hardware, such as a touch screen, stylus, and other things, and again, all these “goodies and bells and whistles” will not weigh down other editions of Windows that do not require support for extra hardware.

Of course, before the official release of Windows CorePC can still change many times, as is usually the case with Microsoft. However, the direction of development of the most popular desktop operating system towards modularity and integration of artificial intelligence is quite obvious and understandable.
