Microsoft will make it easier to switch default programs in Windows 11

Microsoft is promising significant changes to Windows regarding which programs control which file types open by default and how users can choose programs to pin to the Windows Start menu or taskbar.

What is known

With the new URI, developers will be able to send users directly to a specific location in Settings to change the default app for certain types of files or links. Microsoft will also start separately testing an API that will allow programs to pin a primary or secondary tile to the taskbar.

When Windows 11 came out, it had a confusing and cumbersome process for setting up default programs, which was a step backwards from Windows 10 and required users to browse through each individual file type rather than just select their desired web browser or image editor, so the new the system should simplify the experience of using the system for ordinary users.

Of course, getting developers to actually use new Windows features is always tricky, but Microsoft says it’s ready to lead the way by building support for new menus in the Edge browser as soon as they become available.
