Modernized destroyer HMS Dauntless sailed to the Caribbean to test new engines in warm waters

The destroyer HMS Dauntless (D33) of the Royal Navy has recently been upgraded and is now heading to the Caribbean. The purpose of the mission is to test engines in warm waters.

What is known

HMS Dauntless was launched in 2006 and entered service about 3.5 years later. In 2020, the ship went for modernization. As part of the Power Improvement Project (PIP), the destroyer received new engines, and in the early summer of 2022, she went to sea for the first time in two years.

The cost of the project is estimated at £160 million (~$200 million). The contract was executed by BAE Systems as the main contractor. BMT Defense Services and Cammell Laird also took part in the project.

HMS Dauntless will cross the Atlantic Ocean and head to the Caribbean. The upgrade involves the installation of Rolls-Royce MTU Series 4000 diesel generators instead of General Electric’s Wärtsilä 12V200.

In April of this year, a series of tests was completed, as a result of which the 8500-ton ship was declared ready for operation. She became the first Type 45 destroyer to be upgraded by PIP.
