My Xiaomi 12 Pro overheats when I’m playing demanding games. I tell you what to do to avoid it.

A few months ago, I decided to change mobile and move from the Xiaomi Mi 9 that I had old and with which I have been so happy, to the latest top of the range from Xiaomi, the Xiaomi 12 Pro. Looking for different ways of financing and, knowing myself, I decided to first rent it for a few months to be able to test it thoroughly and … I have mixed feelings with the top of the range Xiaomi this year.

At first I thought that such a beast was capable of moving everything. It is. The problem comes when, for example, I want spend a few hours of my free time playing with some of the latest titles that have come on the market. Here, the Xiaomi 12 Pro does a good job but, it can be short. I will explain why from my point of view it is not a good idea to buy a Xiaomi 12 Pro to play.

It may seem obvious that we do not want to buy a Xiaomi 12 Pro if our intention is to play but, in my case, I wanted a balanced terminal with which to be able to play somewhat demanding games intermittently and that offered me very good sensations in the photographic section.

By having a slim design, heat dissipation is less forceful than in specialized devices

As we saw in the analysisthe terminal will behaves quite well As far as performance is concerned, its processor is plenty and, thanks to its 120Hz, we have a very fluid experience when using the applications.

In the case of games, yes we play undemanding games, the terminal will behave fantastically. The problem comes in video games like Wild Rift, Genshin Impact or some video game that needs more stable FPS or have more graphic load. To my surprise, the phone it overheats, becoming blocked even while I’m trying to continue in the game.

The processor reaches its temperature limit and, trying to protect the hardware, it begins to limit the tasks that I have open, even closing the game and leaving the phone locked until it cools down. If we take into account that in summer it is quite hot, I realize that it can be frustrating and impossible keep the phone cold and with optimal performance in this section.

I have applied some tricks to help it not overheat

Looking how to solve the problem, I have tried follow some homemade tricks in order to obtain performance and that the smartphone does not overheat. I have gotten some results depending on what I was doing.

Close all apps before opening game mode

The first thing I always try when playing with my Xiaomi 12 Pro is close all apps of multitasking and free up ram to my device before opening game mode. In most cases, it helps decongest my terminal so that it can focus on the video game itself, easing the load on the terminal to protect it from high temperatures.

From time to time, even closing everything, I have continued to experience high temperatures in the terminal, even crashing. I can confirm then that this method, although it is true that it helps, no guarantee save the problem.

If it’s not too late, the frozen gel pack trick works

Especially in summer, I also checked what can happen in a country like Spain and its high summer temperatures (indoors). Thinking of solutions, I tried putting a frozen gel pack in the back. I can affirm that it works perfectly if we are careful not to hurt our hands or if we are using a controller. The terminal in this case cools, reaching keep cool, since the gel pack suffocates the residual heat from the back of the terminal well. Obviously, this home remedy can help for a while, but once the gel pack is thawed, we must think about stopping or putting another one if we have any more on hand.

When the terminal is already overheated, we cannot solve the problem. Even applying this home remedy, it will relieve the heat but it will be too late. The terminal in this case has continued to be blocked and I have needed on most occasions to restart it to be able to continue with the video game.

Buying a rear fan can be a good solution

In order to try to play in a better way, an alternative and not-so-homemade solution may be to buy a rear fan, such as the Black Shark FunCooler. These devices allow us to create a cooling layer that dissipates residual heat from our terminal, thus being able to improve the gaming experience.

In my case, I have not purchased the product so I have not been able to fully test the accessory. But, as seen in some videos and reviews, make a good job on the mobile, helping to dissipate heat well.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro is not designed to play

After months, I have realized that simply the Xiaomi 12 Pro It is not a terminal designed to play, since in the design the heat dissipation is not the best on the market, making a processor as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 start to overheat after a while. In terminals of this type, it is normal that the design and the visual and photographic section prevail to the rest. It is for this reason, why you should think very well about acquiring a specialized terminal if your intention is to spend long gaming sessions.

In the rest, I am satisfied with the terminal except for some problem with MIUI such as its typical bloatware or some unexpected closing of an application. The terminal does a great job overall and, thanks to its 120W charger, I can charge the device if I urgently need it in a maximum of half an hour.

You can rest easy, because you are going to have a very good overall experience with the Xiaomi 12 Pro, but you have to keep in mind that the best option is to buy the accessory to cool the terminal if you are going to play a lot. I have not yet decided in my case, until the end of the rental period, I will decide whether to keep the terminal or change it by someone from another brand that provides what I’m looking for.
