Norway to retire 50-year-old P-3 Orion maritime reconnaissance aircraft and sell them to Argentina for $67 million

The Royal Norwegian Air Force will decommission the P-3 Orion maritime reconnaissance aircraft in a few days. Some of them will be sold to Argentina.

What is known

The Royal Norwegian Air Force has been using P-3s for over 50 years. On June 30, 2023, they will be retired. The farewell ceremony will take place at the Andoya air base in the northern part of the country.

Norway will decommission six P-3s. They will be replaced by Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine patrol aircraft. They can fly at an altitude of more than 12,000 meters and reach speeds of over 900 km/h.

Four of the six P-3 Orions will be sold to Argentina. The Scandinavian nation has agreed to sell the planes to Lockheed for $67 million to support patrol operations in the South Atlantic Ocean. But before that, the planes will be sent to the United States.
