VPN is not treason: Deputy Khinshtein defended the right to anonymity on the Internet

He believes that the use of VPN services should not be considered a crime and should not entail criminal liability.

State Duma deputy from the United Russia faction Alexander Khinshtein said that the use of VPN-services should not be considered as treason or extremism. He believes that such technologies can be useful for protecting personal data and confidential information.

“I believe that the use of a VPN is not a crime and should not entail criminal liability. It is a tool that can be used for both good and evil purposes. But not all VPN users should be held responsible for the abuse of this tool, but specific persons who break the law, Khinshtein said in an interview Russian newspaper.

Khinshtein noted that VPN services allow you to bypass blocking sites and applications that may be unfair or erroneous. In addition, he stressed that VPNs help protect personal data from hackers and spies.

“We live in an era of digital security, when our data can be stolen or used against us. VPN is one way to protect your privacy and your rights. I don’t think it should be banned or punished,” the deputy added.

Khinshtein also expressed hope that the legislation in the field of Internet regulation will be improved and take into account the interests of all parties.

“I am for the Internet to be a free and safe space for all citizens of Russia. But this does not mean that we should turn a blind eye to those who use the Internet to distribute extremist and terrorist content, to organize riots or to interfere in our internal cases. For such cases, effective measures of response and punishment should be provided,” Khinshtein concluded.
