RSUH urged to restrict access to ChatGPT in universities

After a sensational scandal with a student, the Russian State University for the Humanities fears for the future of education.

The Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) called for restricting access to the ChatGPT chat bot in educational institutions, which wrote a thesis to a Moscow student. This was reported in the press service of the Russian State University for the Humanities.

The university believes that due to concerns about the negative impact on learning, as well as concerns about the security and accuracy of content generated by the system, it may be appropriate to restrict access to ChatGPT in educational organizations. In addition, the use of neural networks and artificial intelligence at the university was called a “new challenge” for the educational community.

The RSUH claims that it is necessary to develop tools for recognizing texts generated by neural networks in term papers and diplomas, as well as to increase the number of original tasks that students can only complete on their own.

The RSUH statements are related to the recent scandal in which RSUH student Alexander Zhdanov defended his diploma written by ChatGPT. According to him, the neural network generated 60 pages of work, including an introduction, analysis, conclusion, and references to the literature used.

The theme of the thesis is “Analysis and improvement of the management of a gaming organization.” Zhdanov indicated that the originality of the diploma was 82%, and the student spent 23 hours on all the work (15 hours for writing and 9 hours for editing the text).

The defense took place at the end of January, and the student received a “satisfactory” grade. After the student has published the work process on Twitter he said that the university began to receive complaints with a request to deprive him of his diploma, and the university began checking.

Chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022, the company introduced Open AIco-founded by Elon Musk. ChatGPT, in addition to the usual dialogue, is able to search for errors in the code, write poems, scripts and instructions. It is available for everyone to use for free.
