Russian senator proposes to build a “wall” on the Internet

Russia plans to isolate its Internet from the influence of the West.

Member of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council Artyom Sheikin declared that Russia needs to develop a system of state censorship on the Internet modeled on China. He believes that this is necessary because of the hostile policy of Western countries and the disregard for Russian legislation by some Internet resources. As an example, he cited Wikipedia, where, in his opinion, many facts related to Russia are distorted.

Sheikin also stressed that it is necessary to study the technical capabilities of Russia to limit or slow down the work of Internet platforms that do not comply with the requirements of national legislation. China has a massive Internet censorship system known as the Great Firewall. As a result, many popular services and websites are blocked in China, including Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook* and Instagram*, Clubhouse, Twitch and some global media.

GFW is an Internet content filtering system in China. The development of the project was started in 1998, and in 2003 it was put into operation throughout the country. The system includes such subsystems as a security management system, a crime reporting system, an exit and entry control system, a monitoring information system, and a traffic control system.

Earlier it became known that the Great Firewall of China (GFW) GFW) developed a new method of censorship , blocking fully encrypted traffic in real time. Based on their understanding of the new censorship system, researchers have developed various circumvention strategies. They shared research findings and bypass suggestions with developers of popular anti-censorship tools such as Shadowsocks, V2Ray, Outline, Lantern, Psiphon, and Conjure. These bypass strategies have been in place since January 2022, helping millions of users bypass a new form of censorship. As of February 2023, all bypass strategies adopted remain effective in China.

Internet isolation is a bad idea for many reasons. First, it violates people’s right to freedom of information and expression. Secondly, it threatens the development of science, education, culture and innovation, which depend on the open and global exchange of knowledge and ideas. Thirdly, it increases social isolation and loneliness, which are already a serious problem in modern society. Research shows that the more people use the Internet for superficial communication and entertainment, the less they interact with real people and the lower their level of trust and solidarity. Internet isolation can further exacerbate this situation, depriving people of the opportunity to receive diverse and reliable information, as well as participate in civil dialogue and democratic processes. Internet isolation is not the protection of national interests, but self-isolation from the world community.
