Shutterstock launches its own AI-assisted image generation service

The service was developed in collaboration with the artificial intelligence laboratory OpenAI.

Last October Shutterstock and OpenAI announced a partnership . The companies wanted to jointly develop the Dall-E 2 AI imaging platform using Shutterstock’s extensive library, which they plan to use to train and refine the algorithm. Then Shutterstock representatives hinted that they would soon provide users with their own tools for creating images using artificial intelligence.

Yesterday company finally presented fruit of his collaboration with OpenAI. Shutterstock’s Creative Flow online platform allows anyone to create images based on a text description. Everything is based on the developments of OpenAI and Dall-E 2. The service itself is available via this link however, it will not work in Russia or Belarus due to service positions on current world events.

A key feature of the new service, according to Shutterstock, is that images are “ready for licensing” as soon as they are created. This is significant given that one of Shutterstock’s big competitors, Getty Images, is currently involved in a lawsuit against Stability AI, the maker of another image-generating service called Stable Diffusion. The lawsuit was filed for using Getty Images to train your AI without the permission of the service itself or the copyright holders.

Shutterstock earlier this month also announced the beginning of a long-term cooperation with Meta *, whose services will now be able to use Shutterstock’s media libraries to create their own AI datasets and train AI algorithms.

While we do not know the financial terms of Shutterstock’s deals with OpenAI, Meta or LG AI Research , the company clearly has a clear commercial goal. Shutterstock seems to be betting that it’s worth getting involved with these new technologies and trying to build a business around them. Rather than stand by and let third party tools take advantage of you, as happened with Getty Images.

Shutterstock positions itself as an “ethical” partner and promises to pay royalties to artists whose images have been used to create AI services. It remains an open question whether these payments will be close to what these artists and photographers would receive for providing the images themselves.

“Over the past two years, Shutterstock has forged strategic partnerships with key industry players such as OpenAI, Meta and LG AI Research to drive their AI research. We can now provide our customers with state-of-the-art AI content generation services developed in collaboration with each other,” said Paul Hennessy, CEO of Shutterstock.

Considering that Shutterstock’s libraries contain not only photos, but also music and videos, it’s safe to say that the company will go far. Apparently, this is not the last joint product with major players in the field of artificial intelligence. We are now waiting for services for generating audio and video content, since all the conditions for this have already been created.
