Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, stated that they analyze the videos that users upload to determine their age.

Precisely, in an appearance before the United States Congress, the CEO of TikTok has publicly acknowledged that his platform analyzes the videos to know the age of the users.

As we can read in TechCrunchFollowing questions about TikTok’s use of biometrics from the US Congress yesterday, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew revealed that his app scans videos uploaded by users to determine their age.

Initially, when Chew was asked how TikTok knows the age of the users, the top leader of the social network indicated that they use age control, that is, they consult the date of birth that the user indicates in their profilebut later stated that his company has developed “some tools where we look at their public profile, to review the videos they post and see if…”.

At that exact moment, the representative Buddy Carter (R-GA) asked Chew for more information in this regard.to which the TikTok CEO responded as follows:

“It’s public. So if you post a video, you choose to make that video public, that’s how you get people to see your video. We look at them to see if they match the age you talked about them at.”

Unfortunately, members of the United States Congress did not pursue this issue further, so we don’t know at this time. what kind of technologies is TikTok using to determine the age of users and if they are based on facial recognition or if the data that is collected about the age of the users are stored permanently on the application servers.
