Spanish officials confirmed that the Norwegian company Kongsberg in 4 years will begin deliveries of the fifth generation Naval Strike Missile (NSM) anti-ship missiles with a launch range of up to 185 km. In 2030, Spain wants to abandon Harpoon missiles.
What is known
The Spanish Navy intends to equip the F-100 and F-110 frigates with the new missiles. If all goes according to schedule, the first NSMs will be delivered in the year of commissioning of the first F-110 frigate, which Navantia is building.
At the moment, the Spanish Navy does not disclose either the amount of the order or the number of missiles. At the same time, the service noted that it will continue to use Harpoon until Kongsberg delivers all NSM missiles.
Note that Harpoon carriers in Spain are not only ships. The fourth-generation F-18 Hornet fighters use AGM-84 modification missiles for air-to-surface operations.
