The US Navy is testing the secret project Overmatch with the carrier strike group USS Carl Vinson

The US Navy has begun testing technology developed as part of the secret project Overmatch. The test involves an aircraft carrier strike group led by USS Carl Vinson.

What is known

During a conference in Maryland, Admiral Mike Gilday reported that the project was in full swing. In addition to an aircraft carrier, a strike group usually includes a couple of destroyers, an aviation wing, one cruiser, and thousands of personnel.

According to the admiral, the Overmatch project is going according to plan in terms of the goals that the US Navy is striving to achieve. At the same time, Mike Gilday refused to clarify any details and features of the tests.

Overmatch is the US Navy’s contribution to the multi-billion dollar Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) program, which is designed to provide uninterrupted communications on the battlefield in land, air, sea, space and cyberspace. Artificial intelligence will form the basis of a single network that will receive information flows from all branches of the US armed forces.

The Overmatch project was launched in 2020. Until now, its implementation is a secret. This is probably due to the fact that the US Department of Defense does not want the information to get to Russia or China.

The implementation of Overmatch will arguably be the Navy’s most important work in 2023. The service has requested $192 million for fiscal year 2024 (FY). If the request is approved, this would mean a $34 million reduction in funding compared to FY2023.
