Turkey upgrades F-16 fighters to the level of Block 70/72 Viper without the participation of the United States – the aircraft will receive an AESA radar, a new communication system and an analogue of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles

The situation around Turkey’s purchase of F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft changes every week. It is possible that Türkiye will modernize the fighters on its own.

What is known

In mid-March, the first persons of the country expressed their readiness refuse to buy F-16 level Block 70/72 (Viper) due to the fact that negotiations with the United States reached an impasse. A few days ago, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reported that Turkey “must receive” both aircraft and upgrade kits.

At the same time, Savunma Sanayi ST reported that Turkish fighters would be improved without the participation of the United States. The fourth generation aircraft modernization project was named ÖZGÜR.

According to the source, Turkey will be able to upgrade all Block 30, Block 40 and Block 50 aircraft to Block 70/72. The fleet of fighters in service with the Turkish Air Force includes more than two hundred fourth-generation aircraft.

As part of the modernization project, they will receive a new Aselsan Active Phased Array Radar. Due to gallium nitride, the radar works better than any analogue. The radar will track sea, ground and air targets.

Interestingly, at the time of the appearance of information about the new radar station, it was said that Turkey would be able to upgrade only 35 of the 43 F-16 Block 30 aircraft. This was due to the lack of source code on Block 40 and Block 50.

In addition to the radar, the upgrade includes a new digital cockpit that will allow information to be displayed on the pilot’s helmet in augmented reality mode. Also, the fighters will receive the Turkish version of the Link 16 communication system, which allows you to exchange data with fifth-generation aircraft and recognize other aircraft in the “friend or foe” mode.

Another upgrade for Turkish F-16s should be support for Merlin and Peregrin missiles. They are a replacement for the American AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. Last summer, Türkiye successfully conducted tests.
