Turkish fighter of the fifth generation KAAN can get Ukrainian engines - Ivchenko-Progress will compete with Rolls-Royce

Ivchenko-Progress took part in a tender for the development of a new jet engine for a fifth-generation Turkish fighter ANOTHERaka TF-X. The Ukrainian firm will compete with the British giant Rolls-Royce.

What is known

The Turkish Ministry of Defense wants to get two engines for the aircraft. Ivchenko-Progress will work together with the Turkish company Tusas Engine Industries (TEI). Rolls-Royce partners with Kale Group. One of the key requirements is the complete transfer of rights to the power plant to Turkey.

It is worth noting that almost 10 years ago Turkey tried to hold a tender for the development of an engine for a Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) fighter jet. Rosoboroneexport from Russia, the French company Snecma, the European company Eurojet, as well as the American duet Pratt & Whitney and General Electric fought for the contract. However, the tender was cancelled.

Note that Ukrainian-made engines are used in many Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles. In particular, in Bayraktar Kizilelma, ANKA-3 and Bayraktar Akinci. Besides, Ukrainian power plant will be installed in a promising helicopter T929 ATAK II.

As for competitors, Kale Arge, which is part of the Kale Group, has the KTJ-3200 and KTJ-1750 engines in its range. They are used in SOM, ATMACA and CAKIR missiles.

The prototype KAAN fighter is equipped with an American-made F110 engine. It is this power plant that will be installed in the first 20 aircraft. Production of KAAN is scheduled for 2028, and the first flight will take place next year. The cost of a fighter may exceed $100 million.
