US launches initiative to use AI for military purposes

UN member states will jointly decide on the use of AI and autonomous weapons by the military.

At an international conference in The Hague, the Netherlands on February 16, the US launched an initiative to promote international cooperation on the responsible use of artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons by the military, which could change the way war is fought.

Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins said the US political declaration, which contains non-legally binding guidelines outlining best practices for the responsible use of AI for military purposes, “could be a hub of international cooperation.”

The declaration was presented at a conference in The Hague, during which there were statements that the current situation in the world has accelerated the trend to bring the world’s first fully autonomous combat robots to the battlefield. The US declaration consists of 12 points, including that the use of AI for military purposes is consistent with international law.

Zachary Cullenborn, a weapons innovation analyst at George Mason University, said the US push to enter the international arena “raises concerns about autonomous weapons. According to him, Washington should include the possibility of human control over nuclear weapons because autonomous weapons pose the highest risk to humanity.

60 countries, including the US and China, addressed the Hague Conference calling for broad cooperation in the development and responsible use of AI for military purposes. The provision of guarantees and human control when using AI was also highlighted. Note that Russia did not participate in the discussion, as it was not invited to the conference.

Military analysts and artificial intelligence researchers said the longer the NWO continues, the more likely it is that drones will be used to identify, select and attack targets without human assistance.

In addition, Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov recently said that fully autonomous killer drones are a “logical and inevitable next step” in weapons development.
