USS Arleigh Burke will remain in service with the US Navy five years longer than planned

The United States Navy has decided not to retire the destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51). He will remain in service until the start of the next decade.

What is known

The decision to keep the USS Arleigh Burke in the fleet was made based on the lethality that it is able to provide as a result of the DDG upgrade. The specialists also conducted a thorough assessment of the material condition and compliance with maintenance plans.

The US Navy received 71 USS Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. 18 ships are under contract, and 11 are at various stages of production. Commander of the US Navy in the Atlantic, Rear Admiral Brendan McLane (Brendan McLane) noted that the DDG-51 is the best warships in history.

USS Arleigh Burke entered service in 1991. The ship spent 30 years of service in Norfolk, Virginia, after which it was transferred to Spain. It is currently deployed as part of the 6th Fleet of the US Navy in Europe.

In 2020, the US Navy abandoned the general plan to extend the destroyer fleet and decided to make decisions on a ship-by-ship basis. USS Arleigh Burke was to remain in service for 35 years, i.e. until 2026. However, last week the US Navy decided to extend the life of the destroyer until 2031.
