Video game publisher Riot Games hacked

Riot Games, the video game developer and publisher behind the titans of the industry such as League of Legends and Valorant, said it would delay the release of game patches for a number of its products. The reason is that last week his internal development environment was compromised.

The incident became known from the publisher’s Twitter post. On Friday, January 20, company representatives reported the incident and promised to keep up to date with the details of the investigation.

“We don’t have all the answers right now, but we would like to inform you in advance that there is no indication that player data or other personal information has been obtained by third parties,” Riot Games said. The company also added that the violation directly affected their ability to publish patch updates for their games. “While our teams are hard at work on fixing the vulnerability, we expect this to impact the frequency of upcoming patch releases across multiple games,” Riot Games said in a statement.

Andrey van Roon, head of League Studio, controlled by Riot Games, said: “Nothing that was planned in LoL 13.2 will be cancelled. We may just have to move things that can’t be fixed (such as schedule changes) to a later date.”

Thus, the hack did not globally affect the publisher’s plans for its current products, although it potentially shifted the release dates for updates.

A similar incident occurred in September 2020 with another major video game publisher, 2K Games. The attackers then hacked into the publisher’s help desk to purposefully infect some of its customers with malware. A month later, 2K sent users an email warning that some of their data had been stolen and put up for sale online following a September security breach.

Whether something similar to Riot Games awaits, time will tell. So far, as mentioned above, the personal data of the players is safe.
