NASA will create an analogue of ChatGPT for astronauts

NASA is developing a system that will allow astronauts to perform maneuvers and conduct experiments using a natural language chatbot interface.

What is known

“The idea is to get to the point where we communicate with spacecraft, and they will inform us of alarms and interesting finds in the solar system and beyond,” — said Dr. Larissa Suzuki (Larissa Suzuki).

NASA plans to deploy the system on its Lunar Gateway space station, which will orbit the Moon and provide support for the Artemis mission. It will be created on the basis of a language interface that will allow astronauts to receive advice on conducting experiments or maneuvers without plunging into complex manuals.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will also be required to control various systems in an idle state, according to NASA. These include autonomous operations with scientific payloads, data transfer prioritization, autonomous operations, station health management, and more.

For example, Suzuki described a scenario where the system automatically corrects for data transmission failures and inefficiencies.

“We can’t send an engineer into space every time a spacecraft crashes or its software somehow breaks,” – she said.
