The NFC Forum, which was founded in 2004 by Sony, NXP Semiconductors and Nokia to improve NFC, has published a plan for the development of the technology in the next 5 years – until 2028.

What to expect

Most importantly, developers want to increase the range of NFC so that payment for goods becomes truly contactless. Now the optimal distance is only 5 mm, which is why you often have to practically touch the terminal with your smartphone. But in the future this indicator will be increased by 4-6 times, that is, up to approximately 30 mm.

Next, the NFC charging power should increase – from 1 W to 3 W. This should bring wireless charging to new and smaller form factors, reshaping industrial designs and defining new markets. In theory, this applies to wireless headphones and other small gadgets.

Also the organization seems to have spied on the function Apple Tap to Pay and now plans to build into the NFC standard the ability to use a smartphone as a payment terminal.

Finally, NFC should become multifunctional. Simply put, once you bring your smartphone to the terminal or reader, you can perform several of the same functions. For example, present several movie tickets at a time.
