Raytheon to turn Coyote Block 3 kamikaze drones into reusable reconnaissance drones for US Navy

The Navy wants to use the Coyote Block 3 for more than just loitering munitions. The service has signed a contract with Raytheon, under which kamikaze drones will be turned into reconnaissance drones.

What is known

The UAV modification program is called Future Advanced Strike (FAST) and is funded by $146 million. A reconnaissance version of the Coyote Block 3 will appear before the end of next year.

Loitering ammunition is designed to strike at enemy armored vehicles. It can be launched from sea and air platforms or from the ground. For this, a special launch tube is provided. The maximum speed of the kamikaze drone is 130 km/h.

The Coyote Block 3 costs $15,000. The US Navy wants to equip the drone with a camera payload to conduct reconnaissance missions and return the drone to base.
