The Netherlands will be able to buy four MQ-9A Reaper Block 5 strike drones worth $611 million

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has moved closer to buying MQ-9A Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles from General Atomics. The potential deal has been approved by the US State Department.

What is known

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified the US Congress of its approval of the deal. The contract is worth $611 million. Congress must approve the sale within 30 days.

The Netherlands is buying more than just four MQ-9A Reaper Block 5 attack drones. The deal also includes three mobile ground control systems, anti-spoofing avionics, up to eight AN/DAS-4 guidance systems, up to 20 Lynx AN/APY-8 radars and other equipment. The agreement also provides for the sale of M299 Hellfire Longbow rocket launchers.

The potential deal would support US foreign policy and national security goals by enhancing the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. The MQ-9A Reaper will be used to conduct reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, as well as provide air fire support.
