US bans Chinese drones over potential spying by Beijing

The law obliges to destroy all Chinese drones and prohibits buying them from China.

Adopted in the US law , which bans all governments from using drones made in China. The law is aimed at protecting the national security and privacy of Americans.

The bill was proposed by Senator Rick Scott of Florida and received support from Democrats and Republicans. Senator Scott said that Chinese drones threaten American sovereignty and human rights. Scott also accused China of using drones for espionage and propaganda.

Chinese drones make up about 80% of the US drone market. They are used for various purposes such as fire monitoring, search and rescue, agriculture and entertainment. However, some experts and politicians have expressed concerns that Chinese drones could be transmitting sensitive information to the Chinese government or military.

The bill provides that all authorities must seize and destroy Chinese drones within a year after the law enters into force. It is also prohibited to enter into contracts with Chinese drone manufacturers or purchase their products. Senator Scott urged President Biden to sign the bill as soon as possible.

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI is the subject of accusations and sanctions by the US, which suspects the drones could be used to spy and feed data to the Chinese government.

In 2020 DJI was listed as a banned organization US Department of Commerce, and in 2021 the Pentagon declared that drones pose a potential threat to national security.

In 2023, US senators expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that Chinese drones were still being used in government agencies and demanded an investigation by the CISA. However, in the same year, the Pentagon acknowledged that two models of DJI Government Edition drones do not share data with the Chinese government and recommended them for use.
