Power plans allow you to manage your device’s power consumption. Windows offers 3 power plans by default: Power Saver, Balanced (Recommended), and High Performance. You may customize these plans as per your preferences or create custom power plans that are optimized for your computer configuration. However, several users cannot access the power plan options in Windows 11/10. When they try to change the plan settings on their PC, they get an error message that says:

Your Power plan information isn’t available.

Your power plan information isn’t available in Windows 11

The issue has been primarily encountered by users after an update or, while they were trying to edit or create a power plan through the Control Panel. Clicking on the ‘Why can’t Windows retrieve this information?‘ link does not help either, as it opens some Microsoft site page.

If you see the error, Your Power plan information isn’t available, while trying to access the power plan settings, use these fixes to resolve the error:

1. Restore default power plans.
2. Re-establish the missing registry key.
3. Disable and re-enable ACPI in the Windows Device Manager.
4. Run Power Troubleshooter.
5. Reset This PC.

Let us see these in detail.

1] Restore default power plans

A possible cause for not being able to access the power plans in Windows is misconfigured power plan settings. If your power plans have got messed up due to any reason, you can always restore all Power Plans and reset the power plan settings to default using the Command Prompt.

Type ‘command ‘ in Windows Search and run Command Prompt using administrator rights. Click Yes in the User Account Control (UAC) prompt. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press the Enter key:

powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

The above will restore all default power plans in Windows, delete any custom power plans, and reset the settings for built-in power plans to default.

2] Re-establish the missing registry key

Another cause of the issue is a missing registry key value, that may have been uninstalled by a third-party uninstaller. Follow the steps to re-establish the key:

1. Press Win+R and type regedit in the Run dialogue box that appears.
2. Press the Enter key.
3. Click Yes in the UAC prompt.
4. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI
5. See if the ‘StringCacheSettings‘ key exists. If not, create one by right-clicking on MUI key and then selecting the New > Key option.
6. Now in the right panel (of the StringCacheSettings key), right-click and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
7.  Name this key ‘StringCacheGeneration‘.
8. Double-click on this key and set the Value data as ‘38b‘, keeping Hexadecimal as Base.
9. Reboot your PC and see if the error is gone.

3] Disable and re-enable ACPI in the Windows Device Manager

A few users have also been able to resolve the issue by disabling and re-enabling ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) in the Windows Device Manager. Follow these steps and see if it works for you:

1. Create a system restore point or take a backup of Windows.
2. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manage from the WinX menu.
3. Navigate to the System devices option.
4. Click on the arrow icon to expand the list.
5. Uninstall all ACPI features one by one (right-click and select ‘Uninstall device’). Uninstall the ‘ACPI Fixed Feature Button‘ and ‘Microsoft ACPI Compliant System‘ features in the end. Do not reboot Windows until you’ve uninstalled the very last item in the list.
6. Reboot your system. Windows will take a bit longer to start, as it will download and reinstall all the missing drivers.
7. See if you’re able to access the power plan information.

4] Run Power Troubleshooter

Next, run the Power Troubleshooter.

Navigate to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and click on the Run button next to the Power option.

Power Troubleshooter will diagnose and resolve power issues on your system. After running the troubleshooter, see if you can see the power plan information.

5] Reset This PC

‘Reset this PC’ is a Windows feature that lets you quickly restore Windows 11/10 to factory settings. It eliminates the changes made to system settings and removes third-party apps and drivers you had installed. So it may help resolve the power plan issue.

However, before using it, we recommend returning your system to a previous state, in case you have created a restore point prior to the occurrence of the error. If you haven’t created any restore points, use the Reset This PC feature to fix the ‘Your power plan information isn’t available’ error.

Go to Settings > System > Recovery. Click on the Reset PC button next to the Reset this PC option. Choose between the ‘Keep my files’ or ‘Remove everything’ options. Follow the on-screen instructions and finally press the Reset button. The entire process may take up to an hour to finish restoring Windows. Your PC may also restart a couple of times during the process. When the process finishes, you should be able to access the power plan information.

How do I fix my power plan not showing up?

If your power plans are not showing up on your Windows 11/10 PC, run the built-in power troubleshooter to fix any power issues. If that doesn’t help, restore all power plans and reset plan settings to defaults. To do so, open Comand Prompt using administrator rights and type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes. If you still face the issue, use the Reset This PC option to restore Windows to factory settings.

Why does it say there is currently no power options available?

You may see ‘Your Power plan information isn’t available. Why can’t Windows retrieve this information?’ error message if you’ve misconfigured power plans. This may happen if your power plan settings have been modified by your security software or broken due to a Windows update. This may also happen if your user profile has got corrupted.
