5 coolers for AMD AM5 processors: water and air so that silicon does not get a pipe

-

AMD Ryzen AM5 processors with the X index, that is, the frequency increased to the limit right at the factory, are not equipped with a cooler at all. The reason for this was the heat pack increased to 105 W. The non-X Ryzen 7000 chips are cooler at just 65W and come with an AMD Wraith Stealth cooler, but it certainly isn’t quiet. Therefore, there is nothing left to do but buy a better cooling system: single-tower for Ryzen 5, double-tower for Ryzen 7 or water for Ryzen 9.

Noctua NH-L9a-AM5 – for building a mini PC

Reasons to buy: Compact, self-stabilizing bearing, LNA resistor
Reasons not to buy: Suitable for one socket only.

Noctua NH-L9a-AM5 – an update to probably the most famous low-profile cooler in the world. Its height is only 37mm, even many RAM modules are taller. For comparison, boxed coolers from Intel and AMD are 47 and 53 mm high, respectively. Now the “Austrian pancake”, as computer enthusiasts jokingly call it, has received support for the AMD AM5 processor socket. We look forward to the release of Ryzen APUs with a powerful RDNA 3 integrated graphics card, which will allow you to build a mini PC in a thin case.

With very compact dimensions, the cooler weighs almost half a kilogram, the reason for which is thick aluminum fins through which copper heat pipes pass. The 92mm fan is based on Noctua’s proprietary SSO2 self-stabilizing bearing with a lifespan of 150,000 hours. The maximum rotation speed is 2500 rpm or 1800 rpm when using the supplied LNA resistor. There is also a version of the same cooler for the competing Intel LGA 1700 socket.

Gelid Tranquillo Rev.5 – Universal Soldier

Reasons to buy: Multi-socket, hydraulic bearing fan, low price.
Reasons not to buy: Direct contact of tubes with process.

Frozen Tranquillo Rev.5 is a long-awaited update to one of the most popular budget processor towers. Added mounts for modern sockets Intel LGA 1700 and AMD AM5. At the same time, support for the classics remained up to LGA 1366 and FM1. The cooler itself received a unified black color of both fins and heat pipes. The latter is even more important as it protects the copper from corrosion. Only the sole of the cooler remained unpainted: the contact of the tubes with the processor is direct.

This is better for single-chip processors, but slightly worse for chiplets. However, the difference is only a few degrees. There are four tubes, their soldered ends are not covered with a decorative cover, and the cooler’s height is moderate – only 154 mm. The complete 12 cm fan on a hydro-dynamic bearing rotates at a speed of 700 to 1600 rpm. The turntable connector is 4-pin PWM, and the noise level at maximum speed does not exceed 27 dB. The cooler weighs about half a kilo, so you don’t have to worry about the motherboard bending under its weight.

DeepCool AG620 ARGB – if you don’t want water

Reasons to buy: Two towers with a total weight of 1.3 kg, a pair of fans with ARGB.
Reasons not to buy: The ends of the tubes are not covered by anything.

DeepCool AG620 ARGB – as they say, one tower is good, but two is better. This helps the air cooler compete on equal terms with dropsies. The heat sink is declared 260 W, which allows us to classify this model as a “supercooler”. This is enough to cool any modern processor, even the flagship Intel Core i9 and AMD Ryzen 9 in Turbo Boost and Precision Boost Overdrive, respectively. At the same time, the height of the cooler does not exceed the standard 160 mm.

Six copper heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm pass through two arrays of aluminum plates, which actually forms two towers. The whole structure weighs in total 1.3 kg and is painted in a single black color, which adds style and protects against corrosion. But the soldered ends of the tubes are not covered by anything, this is already the prerogative of the older model AK620. A pair of 120mm fans with hydrostatic bearings are decorated with ARGB. Addressable illumination allows you to configure at least each LED separately, which gives a greater variability in colors and flicker modes.

Xilence LiQuRizer LQ240PRO – for hot processes

Reasons to buy: 300W heat sink, quiet pump with ceramic bearing.
Reasons not to buy: Not enough RGB lighting.

Xilence LiQuRizer LQ240PRO – a two-section system of water, or rather liquid cooling. After all, there is not water inside, but a dielectric liquid refrigerant. The 240 mm size is the most versatile, as it fits into most even budget computer cases both from the top and from the front. The 300W TDP level allows you to cool not only consumer Intel Core processors with socket LGA 1200 and 1700, but also semi-server Xeon processors with LGA 2011 and 2066.

But from AMD, only Ryzen AM4 and AM5 are supported, but not the Threadripper family. The water-resistant ceramic bearing pump has a fixed speed of 2100 rpm, which is quieter than most competitors. Two complete fans are devoid of illumination, only the pump cover has it, but they are built on durable FDB bearings. The rotation speed varies from 500 to 1500 rpm. If you wish, in the future you can upgrade to ARGB turntables, there are also such in the Xilence assortment.

Aerocool Mirage L240 WH — for whom decor is important

Reasons to buy: Immediately ready to go, three colors, the effect of a bottomless mirror.
Reasons not to buy: Synchronization with Biostar is not declared.

Aerocool Mirage L240 WH – All-in-One class processor dropsy, that is, filled with refrigerant from the factory. Unlike custom coolers, installing it is no more difficult than an air cooler. There are three colors of fans and pumps to choose from: black, white and pink. Additionally, a proprietary RGB backlight called Infinity Mirror is implemented, which gives the visual effect of a bottomless mirror. Aerocool computer cases of the Mirage series also exist with a similar decor.

The backlight syncs with all popular motherboards: ASUS Aura, MSI Mystic, Gigabyte Fusion and ASRock Polychrome. Support for Biostar Vivid has not been officially announced, but most likely it will also work. The pump contacts the processor through a copper plate with a large number of microchannels, which improves heat dissipation. This is especially important for AMD Ryzen processors with multiple chiplets instead of a single die. The pump bearing is made of stainless steel, and the fan bearings are hydraulic with a resource of up to 60,000 hours.
