Paragraphica: a camera that “sees” the world through the eyes of AI

A Danish designer has created a unique gadget that converts text descriptions into photos using a neural network.

Have you ever wondered what the world looked like through the eyes of artificial intelligence? Now you can find out with Paragraphica’s camera, which creates photos based on location data and a text description. The camera does not have a lens, but instead uses open API and a text-to-image transformation model to render a particular place and moment.

Paragraphica is the creation of Danish designer Bjorn Karmann from Amsterdam. He said he was inspired by the star mole, which lives underground and does without light. It senses the world with its tentacle-like tendrils, which provides it with an unusual and clever way to “see”. Karmann wanted to create a camera that would help him empathize with other sentient beings and their ways of perceiving the world.

The Paragraphica camera exists as a physical prototype and a virtual camera to try Online Pocket. The physical camera consists of a Raspberry Pi 4 computer, a 15-inch touch screen, a 3D printed case, and custom electronics. There are three dials on the camera that allow you to control the data search radius, image graininess, and text matching degree.

Location data is collected using public APIs such as Google Maps, OpenWeather Map, and Foursquare. They include information about the address, weather, time of day, and nearby places. By correlating all these data points, Paragraphica produces text that details the representation of the current place and moment. The camera then uses the Stable Diffusion API deep learning model to convert the text to an image.

The “photo” you get is not just a snapshot, but a complex and subtle image of where you are and how the AI model “perceives” it.

Interestingly, the photographs do reflect some of the moods and emotions associated with the place, but look strange or unrealistic as they are generated by artificial intelligence based on a textual description rather than the actual appearance.

Karmann says that his goal was to create a camera that would offer a way to experience the world around us that is not limited to visual perception. Through location data and AI image synthesis, Paragraphica provides a deeper understanding of the essence of the moment from the point of view of other intelligences.
