American students launched a rocket to a height of 15,548 meters and got jobs at SpaceX, Firefly and Blue Origin

Embry-Riddle Aviation University students were able to launch a rocket that set a new altitude record among American educational institutions. Moreover, the new rocket rose more than twice as high as the previous record holder.

What is known

The students spent 4,000 hours building the rocket. This includes development and testing. The launch took place in California’s Mojave Desert. Within 26.1 seconds, the rocket accelerated to Mach 1.4 (1729 km / h) and rose to a height of 15,548 meters. The previous record was 6706 meters.

Last fall, students tried to launch an Altair rocket, but it exploded. Engineers have worked hard to eliminate all problems, incl. reduce the weight of the structure.

The project has attracted funding from several aerospace companies. These include Lockheed Martin and Firefly. The latter offered some of the team members a job. SpaceX and Blue Origin did the same.
