If Biometric device driver is missing from your system device manager or you deleted it by accident, this post will help you restore it. You may have seen that Windows 11/10 provides users with some additional sign-in options such as Windows Hello Fingerprint, Windows Hello Face, and so on. These features require biometric device drivers to work properly. If a user accidentally deletes biometric device drivers from their system, they may experience many errors with the Windows Hello login options.

Below we have listed some methods to recover deleted or missing biometric device drivers in Windows 11/10. But before you start, you can do one thing: open Device Manager and search for hardware changes. According to feedback from many affected users, this trick helped them recover a missing biometric device on their system. You should also try this. If nothing happens, you can proceed to the solutions listed below.

Biometric data is missing or not installed Biometric device using Device Manager

The following solutions can help you recover missing or deleted biometric device on your Windows 11/10 computer.

  2. Reinstall the device driver via PowerShell.
  3. Reset your face and fingerprint recognition options in Settings.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
  5. Uninstall Windows Updates and install the latest version from microsoft.com.

1]Install the Windows HelloFace.inf file

If you accidentally deleted your biometric device from Device Manager, installing HelloFace.inf may bring it back.

The steps for this are listed below:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Copy the following path and paste it into the address bar of the explorer.
    C:WindowsSystem32WinBioPlugInsFaceDriver
  3. There you will find the HelloFace.inf file.
  4. Right click on the file and select Install
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Reboot the system after completing the installation process and see if the biometric device is restored in Device Manager or not.

If you do not find the HeloFace.inf file in the location provided in step 2 above, navigate to the following location and open the folder named amd64_microsoft-windows-hello-face… There you will find the installation file.

C:WindowsWinSxS

2]Reinstall the device driver via PowerShell.

If manually installing the HelloFace.inf file doesn’t work, you can try installing it via PowerShell. Follow these steps:

Run PowerShell as administrator.

Before running the command to reinstall the HelloFace driver, you must change the current working directory in PowerShell. To do this, run the command cd by target directory. For your convenience, we have written the complete command below. You just need to copy and paste it into PowerShell.

cd C:WindowsSystem32WinBioPlugInsFaceDriver directory

Now enter the following command and hit Enter. This will remove the HelloFace driver.

pnputil.exe /delete-driver .HelloFace.inf

Now you need to reinstall the HelloFace driver. To do this, type the following command in PowerShell and press Enter.

pnputil.exe /add-driver .HelloFace.inf /install

Wait for the installation process to complete.

Open Device Manager. It should now show the biometric device driver.

3]Reset face and fingerprint recognition options in settings

Resetting face and fingerprint recognition settings through the Windows Settings app can help restore deleted or missing biometric device drivers.

The following steps will help you with this:

  1. Launch the Windows Settings 10 app.
  2. Click on Accounts
  3. You’ll see Sign-in Options From the left side. Press here.
  4. Now, depending on what you’ve configured on your system, click Windows Hello Face or Windows Hello Fingerprint and click the icon Remove
  5. After that, you will see that Set ups in Windows Hello. Click on it and then click Get started
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up Windows Hello again.
  7. Restart your computer if necessary.

Now open Device Manager and check if the biometric device driver is restored.

4]Uninstall and reinstall the drivers.

If you haven’t uninstalled the biometric device driver but it is missing from Device Manager, you can try the following solution:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Click on View on the toolbar and then select Show hidden devices
  3. Now expand Other devices or Unknown devices node (whichever is available in your device manager) and check if a biometric device driver is available there.
  4. If you find a device driver there, right-click it and select Uninstall device
  5. A pop-up window will open. Check the box that says Delete the driver software for this device and press Uninstall
  6. Now visit the manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver software.
  7. Install the downloaded driver and restart your computer.

5]Uninstall Windows Updates and install the latest version from microsoft.com.

Some users have resolved this issue by uninstalling Windows updates that do not have security fixes and then installing the latest Windows update by downloading it from microsoft.com

Hope this helps.
