Branded computer versus assembled or do-it-yourself desktops – which is best for you?

-

I once had a training firm that also sold and repaired computers. Computers at the time were mostly desktop computers, easy to open and do whatever you want. Of course, there were also branded computers – with a warning: Opening the seal will void the warranty.

For the keen technician, it was not. In any case, we will not be comparing DIY computers with branded computers here. Rather, since the scenario today is very different from what it was in those days, we list the benefits of branded computers side-by-side with the benefits of DIY desktops. So you can judge for yourself which option suits you best – a branded computer or assembled or made by hand.

Branded computer versus assembled

Before we start, let’s break them down into DIY desktop computers, assembled computers, and branded computers. DIY may fall under the category of assembled computers, but in this article, we will use the phrase “assembled computers” to refer to computers assembled by professional firms for their customers. Most of the article focuses on desktop computers, but is also suitable for laptops and other types of computers.

Branded computers, assembled or do-it-yourself desktops

Back in 2003-2004, people believed that branded computers were worth much more money than locally built computers. We gave them an estimate of the assembled computer by showing them the prices of branded computers. The customers knew we knew more about computers and they trusted us. I don’t think we were lying, but we definitely received orders – although not from large organizations such as banks, etc., which bought in bulk. Our firm wasn’t big enough to give them confidence that we would stay for another five years to offer them on-site troubleshooting. But we must definitely look at the computers they used. Looking at their processors (more precisely, at the processor cabinets), we could tell that they were all assembled.

Times have changed since then. At the time, people preferred a low-cost computer that could do what they wanted – work in the office or in person. Graphics intensive computers for games, etc. There were also, but the demand was quite low compared to other needs. In the current period, different needs are combined. People need office computers on which to play games and watch movies. Naturally, the configuration changes and becomes a combination of two or more types of computers.

Branded computers save time, assembled computers … dirty?

Turning to the advantages of computers of well-known manufacturers over computers in assemblies, you save a lot of time on their purchase. Building an economical “assembled” gaming computer, for example, may require significant research into details, while choosing an economical “branded” computer would only mean researching configurations. This way you will save a lot of time.

Just in case the above is unclear, in order to have a computer with your own hands, you first need to know what all the parts are required, who all sells those parts and the capabilities of those parts, not to mention costs, warranties, etc. as opposed to comparison branded computers on the Internet, it takes quite a long time. Some companies provide self-assembly kits, but they are not very different from the proprietary ones, since the configuration is predefined.

This, in turn, means paperwork and material documents that include costs, warranty, address, phone number of service providers in your area, and other details for nearly every part you will use in your assembled DIY computer * your * preferred configuration. An organized mess ?!

Cost & Warranty For Branded Computers vs Assembled Computers

The cost of branded computers may be slightly higher. You may have to choose a configuration that is slightly different from what you imagine, but then the warranty comes into play, offering you peace of mind when it comes to technical issues. Branded computers come with a warranty on the entire computer, which means that if any part breaks down, you can simply ask the local service center for the computer brand (not the parts manufacturer) to check it.

The costs of homemade and assembled computers vary, and more often than not, you have to bargain. At least from what I know from my experience – if a client needs a card worth less than XYZ dollars, we will offer him two or more alternatives. But then you need to look into the question of cost-performance ratio. No other graphics card is as good as Nvidia. Would you agree with that? If I need a gaming PC, I will insist on the best graphics card available with lots of its own memory!

Warranty Issues for DIY Computers

If you build your own computer, you can get whatever you want. In other words, the configuration of the computer can be exactly what you want. But then the warranty does not apply to the entire computer, but to parts and components. This, in turn, means that you must store information for more than one service center – one for each part. For example, a motherboard service center, processor service center, SMPS service center, video cards, monitors and everything else. You can save on hassle by purchasing parts from one manufacturer. You can’t buy every part from a single manufacturer, but you can group them – Intel motherboard, Intel chips, Intel graphics!

Either way, you save on hassle if you divide the parts into groups so that you have to book fewer service centers. Also, make sure you have a service center for these parts in your area, otherwise problems will arise.

Complete computers have the same warranty as branded computers

The compromise can be in the assembly of the computer. In this case, the manufacturers go out of their way to provide you with the highest possible configuration that you need. More often than not, these vendors try to convince you to use alternative configurations that they know are readily available and easy to maintain. But since these types of vendors are the ones who don’t want to lose a single customer, you can let them know that you NEED to have this configuration!

Despite this, the warranty always covers the entire computer (monitors may be an exception). In this case, if any part fails, it is the manufacturer’s problem – to fix or replace the part. This can be the middle way – if you are not sure if your computer suits your needs, and if you are not willing to risk broken computers sitting idle for ages due to damaged parts!

Summary

Does the above mean that I am saying that you should buy branded computers? Not really! It depends on what you want to do and, more importantly, how much time you spend assembling your computer (s). Your budget matters too.

If you need a lot of computers, would you sit down and build each one yourself? In this case, you can check out branded desktops. If you are thrifty, you can also check out suppliers offering assembled computers, and if you’re lucky, you might get a good deal.

But if you want exactly what you have in mind and can put in the time it needs, DIY computers are the best option for you as they will have the configuration you want. Apart from that, you also get the pleasure of building your own car. Many people still do this, especially those who play online games – just for their own pleasure. Another example: having bought three sets of 3.1 speakers from well-known companies, I smashed them all to build my sound system. It took a little time, but I get the sound I want without having to compromise between 16 kHz and 32.5 Hz. Most branded sound systems kill these frequencies!

Thus, it is up to you to decide which one is best for you.The need varies; urgency varies; the budget varies; the amount varies. Based on all of these factors, only you can decide whether to buy branded computers, do-it-yourself desktops, or assembled computers.
