British and German Eurofighter Typhoons intercepted Russian aircraft near NATO borders

This week, British and German Eurofighter Typhoons conducted their first joint NATO mission. They were engaged in patrolling Estonian airspace.

What is known

Two Eurofighter Typhoons were alerted after a Russian plane approached Estonian airspace. The pilot of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain said that they were able to identify the Russian aircraft.

Russian tanker aircraft Il-78 flew between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad. He did not contact air traffic controllers in Estonia. Later, German and British Typhoon fighters were sent to intercept the Russian An-148 aircraft, which also approached the airspace of the Baltic country.

Aircraft of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain and the Luftwaffe of the Bundeswehr conduct joint NATO air patrol operations in the region. For four months starting in April 2023, the Royal Air Force will lead the mission. For this, four Eurofighter Typhoon fighters were sent to Estonia.
