The Volt Typhoon hacker group has installed malware on American “critical” systems. This statement was made by Microsoft and the National Security Agency (National Security Agency).
What is known
US authorities say the Volt Typhoon hackers receive funding from the Chinese government. According to the agency, cyber experts attacked networks in critical sectors of the US infrastructure, including on the island of Guam.
The National Security Agency believes that China has been operating for years to obtain sensitive information from critical infrastructure organizations. The statement notes that the PRC is using “very sophisticated” means to attack American critical infrastructure.
US officials believe the Guam infiltration is part of a larger Chinese intelligence gathering system. It also includes a spy balloon that flew over US territory earlier this year and was shot down off the California coast by an F-22 fighter jet.
Guam has been in the spotlight as the Andersen Air Force Base is located on the island. It is assumed that in the event of China’s invasion of Taiwan, this military facility will be used by the United States to respond. In addition, it is also a key hub for ships in the Pacific.
