End of an era for Windows 10: Microsoft warns about the consequences

Microsoft is dropping support for Windows 10 and is urging users to upgrade to Windows 11 or face serious risks.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 version 22H2 will be the final update with new features for the Windows 10 operating system.

Windows 10 22H2 went public in October 2022 and was released to the public on November 18, 2022.

All editions of Windows 10 22H2 (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, and IoT Enterprise) will end service in October 2025.

“The current version, 22H2, will be the last version of Windows 10 and all editions will be supported with monthly security releases until that date,” said Jason Leznek, general product manager, Windows Service and Delivery.

Users and organizations who wish to stay on Windows 10 are encouraged to update their devices to Windows 10 22H2 to continue receiving monthly security updates until October 14, 2025, when Windows 10 reaches its end of support.

More than 73% of all Windows PCs are still running Windows 10, according to a March 2023 study by Valve and StatCounter’s Windows market share statistics.

As Microsoft revealed in a separate newsletter posted on Thursday, LTSC releases will continue to receive updates beyond October 2025 according to their specific life cycles.

For example, Windows 10 LTSC editions will end mainstream support in January 2027, with the only exception being IoT Enterprise edition, which will be supported until January 2032.

Microsoft also announced the release of Windows LTSC in the second half of 2024: Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC.

Thus, Microsoft is actively pushing for the transition of users and organizations to their new Windows 11 operating system, which will ensure that they have access to the latest updates and features. In turn, support for Windows 10 will continue until October 2025, after which the company will stop servicing this version of the OS. However, LTSC editions of the operating system will be maintained for a longer period of time, according to the established support period for each particular edition.
