Euclid will try to fill this gap by creating the most detailed map of the universe in the history of astronomy.

Euclid will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. After a month-long journey through space, Euclid will join the James Webb Space Telescope in a stable orbit around the L2 Lagrange point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.



From there, Euclid will make the largest map of the universe, covering up to 2 billion galaxies in more than a third of the celestial sphere. The Visible Light Camera, Near Infra-Red Spectrometer and Photometer will measure the shape and distance of galaxies, as well as capture the light that has taken 10 billion years to reach Earth. This will allow us to see the Universe as it was in its early stages of development.


“Dark Detective”

Euclid is called the “dark detective” because it will look for traces of dark matter and dark energy that do not emit light and do not interact with ordinary matter.


Dark matter is an unknown form of matter that makes up about 80% of the mass of the universe and holds it together with its gravitational pull.


dark energy is an unknown form of energy that makes up about 70% of the energy of the universe and causes its accelerated expansion.

Euclid will study the gravitational influence of dark matter on visible matter, as well as the influence of dark energy on the expansion of the universe.

Euclid is an international project run by the European Space Agency (ESA). The project includes 16 member countries of the European Union, as well as the United States and Canada. More than 1,000 scientists and engineers from 130 institutes are involved in the project.

The cost of the project is about €1 billion, €800 million of which is from ESA and the rest from national agencies and partners. Euclid must operate for at least 6 years, but its service life can be extended up to 10 years. The first results of the work are expected in 2024. Scientists hope that Euclid will help them understand what makes the universe work the way it works, and what its future fate is.
